about us!!
Hello guys.. We are Waste Warriors. We are working on the topic waste management in school. We are a group of students from Pawar Public School Dombivali. Our school focuses on each and every aspect to develop the students personality and transform them into responsible citizens of the future. We yearn to spread awareness about waste management through our project so that we can make Earth a better place to live in. We desire to make people aware about various methods to collect waste, segregate it and dispose it properly so as to avoid any harm to the environment. We want to help the nature heal and make it greener and more beautiful. We look forward to prevent any degradation in the environment. We intend to carry it out on a small scale starting from our school and then spread it everywhere.

OUR RESEARCH!!
Describe your school (number of pupils, what kind of building, etc.)
Our school has a total strength of 2285 students.
We have classes from Nursery to Grade 10. Our school is a five storey building with a volleyball court, a basketball court, a circular football ground, an athletic track for engaging pupils in sports. We also have a canteen, a multipurpose hall, library, science labs, etc.
Measure the amount of rubbish produced on two days.
Due to the current pandemic situation, our school is closed for the students and they have online classes. Thus there is no waste produced in the current situation.
While, when the school was working, here are a few pictures of the waste collected in about 1-2 months:

The following image is that of the register that was used to keep all the information about the rubbish collected in our school before the pandemic situation..
Are younger students producing more rubbish than the older students? What about boys and girls?
The younger students produce more rubbish in our school.
The boys produce more waste in comparison of the girls.
What kind of rubbish is being produced by the students at school (plastic, paper, food, etc.)?
Mostly paper waste is produced. In the classrooms, paper waste is found like crumbled papers and torn papers. Pencil shavings and broken chalks are found in the classrooms as well. Rubbish like paper, cardboard, broken crayons and other art materials is found in the art and craft rooms. Food waste is found in canteen like the leftovers and the food dropped by the students.
What happens with the rubbish? What happens with the rubbish after the breaks?
All the waste that is collected is separated as wet waste and dry waste. The things that are recyclable are sent for recycling. Then it is put in black trash bags and is collected in a huge bin. Lastly it is thrown away by the trucks.
Are the students involved in collecting the rubbish, in cleaning the canteens?
No, the students are not allowed in collecting the rubbish and in cleaning the canteens.
Why are the students throwing some rubbish on the ground?
The students are not supposed to throw any kind of waste on the ground as strict actions can be taken by the higher authorities.
School policy:
What is the school policy about use of paper/ recycling paper?
Our teachers encourage us to reuse and recycle things as far as possible. They advice us to use both the sides of paper or chart papers. We are asked to bring a newspaper once in a week so that it can be sent for recycling. Our school also has an Eco club that gives distinctive attention towards the waste management process and the recycling activities.
Are there any methods to recycle waste at school/ separate garbage?
In our school, we collect dry waste and wet waste separately. The dry waste includes mostly the paper waste. The wet waste includes the canteen waste. Out of that the things like newspaper, magazine, chart papers, tins, glass jars, metal containers, etc which are recyclable are sent for recycling.
What are the school regulations about rubbish/ chewing gum?
The students are strictly not allowed to bring chewing gum in school.
What happens if a student throws something on the ground?
If a student throws something on the ground, it is cleaned and picked up by the dada or didi of the housekeeping staff.
Has ICT-technology contributed to reduce the use of paper at school?
Yes, the ICT-technology has contributed to reduce the use of paper at school. Instead of giving printed circulars, it is to be accessed on the teno app
What methods can be used to limit the amount of rubbish?
1. We can create a compost from all the waste of canteen like food leftovers, vegetable peels, etc. This will help to cut down quite an amount of rubbish and would be useful as a manure for planting trees.
2. We can reuse things like paper, plastic bottles, tins, ropes. We can make beautiful art works out of all these.
3. We can reduce the paper waste by circulating all the necessary information on digital platform instead of paper circulars.
4. We should create workshops once every month in our school and engage the pupils in activities related to waste management.
5. We should increase the number of bins so that the students throw the waste in the bins and not anywhere.
6. We should appoint some students to patrol in the corridors during the breaks to keep a check on the proper disposal of rubbish by the students.

3. Interview with an employee of a recycling company
We interviewed Mrs. Jae, Co-Founder of Re Charkha- The EcoSocial Tribe
1. What does your company do? Where is your company situated?
We are social enterprise working to save the environment and enabling tribal and rural livelihoods. We upcycle waste plastic such as poly bags, plastic bags, biscuit or wafer wrappers and other multilayered packaging using traditional charkha and handloom to weave it into a fabric. This unique process is designed to provide livelihood opportunities to the tribal women and youth. This upcycled handwoven fabric is then used to make handcrafted utility items such as bags, fashion accessories, home décor and stationary products. We retail these products at our office in Pune and directly sell through exhibitions in India, USA, Singapore, UK, France, New Zealand and Dubai. Apart from these we customize the products for bulk orders or corporate orders.
2. Does your company have the capacity to sort the waste before it is picked up?
We do not have any collection center or collection drives or collection teams associated. People send us the waste plastic to our Pune office from where we forward it to our weaving unit. So the sorting of this plastic has to be done at the consumer end at their homes before. They should see that it is properly sorted.
3. How can the people buy the recycled items you produce?
We have our own website www.recharkha.org where people can come and check out all our retails. We have an online store of the same where they can place orders.
4. What type of waste does your company treat?
We accept four types of waste plastic such as poly carry bags, multilayered packaging like food wrappers, detergent packets, glittery gift wrappers. We also upcycle old audio video tapes. U have to make sure that there is no waste particle so that it becomes easy for us to sanitize it and then upcycle it.
We do not accept the following types of waste: oil packets, milk packets, tetra packs, small sachets like shampoo, ketchup and straws.
The following image shows the recycled products manufactured by the Re Charkha company. They are bags made up of gift wrapper and plastic:
We conducted an audio interview with Miss Jae. The interview is as follows:
CONCLUSION:
How can waste management be realized most effectively at school?
A student spends almost 6-8 hours at school. So it is very important for a student to realize the importance of keeping the school clean and implementing various smart strategies to manage and treat the waste produced. The students engaging in taking steps towards better waste management in school would sow seeds to a greener mind and a greener future. We have come to know about many methods to collect waste and treat it properly through our research. We should adopt them and thereby create a positive impact.
FIRST VIDEO CONFERENCE!!
We had our first video conference with the European students on 2nd November, 2020. We conducted it through a Zoom meeting. It was a great and enthusiastic interaction and we came to know more about them.
